Nestle to close Ohio factory by 2027 while keeping corporate campus open

Nestle is closing its Solon manufacturing plant and shifting production to South Carolina, but corporate and R&D roles in Ohio are safe.

What happened

Nestle informed employees on Monday that it will close its foodservice manufacturing plant in Solon, Ohio. This facility makes products sold in pouch packaging for foodservice clients. Production of these frozen meal pouches will end by the third quarter of 2027. The facility will shut down completely before the end of that year. Production is moving to an existing plant in Gaffney, South Carolina.

The closure will impact hundreds of manufacturing workers. Nestle declined to comment on the exact number of affected employees. The company plans to file a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification notice around March 2027. Impacted staff will receive separation benefits and transition assistance. They will also have opportunities to apply for available positions at other Nestle facilities across Ohio.

This move only affects the factory floor. Nestle will keep its research, development, and corporate operations running on the same Solon campus. The company also confirmed that its Streetsboro distribution center and its manufacturing facility on West 25th Street in Cleveland will continue operating. This follows previous cuts in Solon, including 216 manufacturing jobs eliminated in January 2024.

By the numbers

Why it matters

This split decision shows a clear trend in how large companies manage their physical footprint. Nestle is cutting blue-collar manufacturing jobs in Ohio while protecting white-collar corporate and R&D roles in the exact same city. The company stated this is the most sustainable path forward as customer needs evolve. For job seekers, this means factory and supply chain roles face higher relocation risks as companies consolidate production to states like South Carolina.

A second-order effect is the local competition for manufacturing jobs. Hundreds of workers will enter the Northeast Ohio job market at the same time late next year. Nestle employs nearly 3,000 people across seven facilities in Ohio, and recently opened a new pet-food factory in Batavia. However, the local Solon market will still feel the pressure. Meanwhile, corporate professionals on H-1B or OPT working at the Solon campus avoid this disruption entirely.

Who this hits

Manufacturing workers

Hundreds of factory workers in Solon will lose their current roles by late 2027. They will need to relocate to other Nestle facilities or find new local employers.

Corporate and R&D professionals

White-collar workers at the Solon campus are not impacted by this closure. Their jobs remain safe as the company maintains its corporate presence in Ohio.

South Carolina job seekers

The Gaffney facility is absorbing the pouch production from Ohio. This shift could create new openings for manufacturing and supply chain workers in the area.

My take

I always watch how companies split their operations. Nestle is leaving the factory floor behind in Ohio but keeping the corporate brain trust intact. If you work in tech or R&D, your location is safer, but manufacturing workers must stay ready to pivot.
