Musk bundles Grok, Cursor and X into one $30 subscription

SpaceXAI just merged Grok, Cursor, and X Premium into a single subscription, but developers will pay extra for third-party AI models.

What happened

SpaceXAI officially launched a unified billing service called The X Subscription on October 12. This new plan merges Grok, Cursor, and X Premium into one single ecosystem. The company offers five different tiers for users. These range from a basic free version up to a massive $200 monthly Ultra plan. The core Premium tier costs $30 a month. This tier gives users access to the Grok Bot task assistant, standard Grok chat, Cursor coding tools, and all X Premium features.

SpaceXAI claims this new package offers massive savings for power users. The company stated that these benefits previously cost $90 a month when purchased separately as SuperGrok, Cursor Pro, and X Premium+. However, the mechanics of how you use these tools have fundamentally changed. Usage for both Grok and Cursor now draws from a single shared allowance. This combined meter refreshes every week. The higher tiers simply multiply this allowance, with Premium getting four times the base Plus limit.

There is a massive catch for developers who rely on outside intelligence. If you want to use third-party models like Anthropic's Claude or OpenAI's GPT inside Cursor, you now face separate charges. These models are billed from the very first use at their published developer rates. Users must pay for this via prepaid credit. Existing Cursor users can keep their old plans, which included third-party model usage. But if you switch to the new bundle, the move is permanent and cannot be reversed by customer support.

Key facts

Why it matters

This changes the fundamental math for developers building with AI. Bundling sounds like a massive discount until you look closely at the shared meter. By forcing Grok and Cursor to pull from a single weekly usage allowance, heavy coders will burn through their limits much faster. If you spend your morning researching on X and chatting with Grok, you might throttle your coding capacity in Cursor for the afternoon. Furthermore, if you rely on Claude or GPT for complex coding tasks, the new bundle strips away your included access. You are now forced to pay per API call on top of your monthly subscription fee.

The second-order effect here is pure ecosystem lock-in. Musk is forcing builders to choose between his in-house models and paying a premium for outside intelligence. By making the account switch permanent, SpaceXAI is trapping users in a unified workspace. Leaving one tool means abandoning all three. This is a highly aggressive business play. SpaceXAI acquired Cursor in August, and now they are using its massive developer base to boost Grok adoption. They are betting that the friction of paying extra for Claude will push coders to just use Grok instead.

For builders

Third party models cost extra

The new bundle strips your included access to Claude and GPT inside Cursor. You must pay developer rates from the first prompt using prepaid credit. Developers relying on non-Grok models lose out heavily and will see their monthly costs spike.

Shared weekly usage limits

Grok and Cursor now pull from the exact same usage pool. If you chat heavily on X, you will drain your coding capacity in Cursor. Heavy users will be forced to buy extra usage or upgrade to the $100 Super tier.

Do not switch accounts blindly

Existing Cursor users can keep their current plans with third-party models included. The company explicitly states that switching to the new bundle is permanent. Customer support cannot undo the switch if you regret losing your legacy pricing.

My take

Musk is using Cursor as bait to force developers onto Grok. The $30 bundle looks like a steal until you realize you have to pay extra for Claude and share a single usage meter across three apps. Keep your legacy Cursor plan unless you are ready to go all-in on the SpaceXAI ecosystem. The illusion of a discount always hides a trap.
