Google Gemini becomes a workspace with in-chat file editing
Gemini now lets you create and edit documents directly inside the chat interface, eliminating the need to switch apps.

What happened
Google just turned Gemini into a full workspace. You can now generate, preview, and edit files directly inside your chat. This builds on an April update that allowed file generation, but now adds in-place editing. The update covers documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets, and code.
The editing process gives you three distinct options. You can expand the file to full screen and type edits yourself. You can highlight specific text to ask questions or request changes to visuals. You can also tell Gemini to refine the entire file contents.
Platform support depends heavily on the file type. PDF preview and editing work on both web and mobile platforms. Everything else, including Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, and code, is currently restricted to the web version. This feature rollout follows the recent launch of Gemini 4 Carbon, which topped the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.

Why it matters
For people building with AI, this changes the division of labor between human and machine. You are no longer just prompting an oracle and taking the output elsewhere. The chatbot interface is becoming the actual canvas where generation, review, and manual revision happen in one continuous loop. This eliminates the friction of copying, pasting, and reformatting across different applications.
The second-order effect is a direct threat to standalone document editors and specialized AI writing wrappers. If users can turn handwritten notes into a PDF and manually tweak the layout without leaving Gemini, they have fewer reasons to open Microsoft Word. The browser tab running the large language model becomes the only tool they need to finish their work. Traditional software companies will lose engagement time.
For builders
AI wrappers lose their workflow advantage
Startups charging for AI document editors just lost their primary moat. If Google offers seamless in-chat editing for free, users will not pay a premium for basic text manipulation wrappers. Thin interface companies will lose subscribers.
Mobile constraints create niche opportunities
Gemini currently only supports PDF editing on mobile devices. Builders can still capture mobile users who need to natively edit spreadsheets, code, or Markdown files on their phones. Mobile-first productivity apps still have a window to win paying customers.
My take
I see Gemini shifting from a simple chatbot to a complete operating system for knowledge work. By keeping users inside the chat for the entire editing process, Google is quietly killing the need for traditional software. If you build AI tools, you must offer specialized workflows that a generalist like Gemini cannot easily swallow.
