OpenAI caps paid ChatGPT accounts per device and card

OpenAI is blocking users who stack multiple paid ChatGPT accounts on a single device or card, forcing them toward pricier credit top-ups.

What happened

OpenAI just added strict device and payment card limits for paid ChatGPT accounts. If you link too many subscriptions to one card or device, you get locked out. The screen will throw a specific Device limit reached error. Once that happens, you can no longer use that affected account on your machine.

The crackdown targets users who rotate through multiple cheap flat-rate subscriptions to bypass usage caps. Logging out of an account does not automatically free up a slot on your device. The new limits hit ChatGPT Go, Plus, Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 plans. Free accounts, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans do not count toward this limit.

OpenAI frames this as part of its security measures. In reality, it pushes heavy users toward buying extra credits or usage resets. These official alternatives are generally much more expensive than just spinning up another basic paid subscription. The company is clearly prioritizing revenue over raw growth.

Key facts

Why it matters

This changes the math for solo developers and small teams bootstrapping their AI workflows. Many founders stack cheap Plus or Pro accounts to run heavy workloads without paying enterprise rates. That loophole is now permanently closed. You must either upgrade to a Business or Enterprise tier or pay a premium for on-demand credits when you hit your limits. This forces startups to rethink their monthly AI budgets.

The second-order effect is a clear signal about the broader AI market. OpenAI is shifting focus from user growth to maximizing revenue per user. The recent move to merge Chat and Work suggests a deeper consolidation of their product lines. The days of easily hackable flat-rate AI access are ending. As compute costs remain high, every major model provider will likely follow suit to protect their margins. Builders need to prepare for stricter enforcement across all platforms.

For builders

Audit your team account sharing

Stop sharing multiple Plus or Pro accounts across the same company devices. If your team hits the device limit, they lose access entirely and logging out will not fix it. You will have to migrate to a Business or Enterprise plan to keep working smoothly.

Budget for higher compute costs

Relying on stacked flat-rate subscriptions is no longer a viable strategy for heavy users. You must model your heavy usage around official credit top-ups or direct API usage. Expect your monthly AI tooling bill to increase as these workarounds disappear.

My take

OpenAI calls this a security update, but it is a pure revenue play. They know builders stack cheap accounts to get more compute. They are shutting down the clever hacks and forcing us to pay retail prices for extra usage. If you want enterprise volume, you now have to pay enterprise prices.
