Anthropic launches Claude Duet: A proactive AI agent that messages you first

Claude Duet flips the script by checking your apps in the background and messaging you first with a morning brief and task alerts.

What happened

Anthropic just released Claude Duet to take on Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots. It is a proactive AI agent built for professionals and small business owners. Instead of waiting for prompts, Duet reaches out to you first. It runs in the cloud on its own virtual machine and works even when you are away from your computer.

The agent is powered by the Claude Opus 5.5 model. It connects to over 6,000 apps through the Claude Marketplace. Every morning, Duet sends a brief of important items from your connected accounts. It then checks your apps every few hours and alerts you if something needs your immediate attention.

Duet can handle simple admin work or complex tasks like building web apps. It requires user approval for sensitive actions like making payments via Stripe Link, sending messages, or deleting files. Anthropic also added a dedicated classifier to prevent sensitive information leaks. The tool is currently a research preview for US-based Pro and Max subscribers.

Key facts

Why it matters

This changes the baseline for AI products entirely. Builders must now think beyond the traditional chat interface. Users will expect AI to monitor their data streams in the background and surface insights proactively. If your application still waits for the user to type a prompt, it will soon feel outdated and slow.

The second-order effect is a massive shift in API usage and compute costs. Duet uses your existing Claude plan limits to run background checks every few hours. This means idle users will still burn through rate limits and compute cycles. Infrastructure providers will win big as proactive agents keep servers busy around the clock.

For builders

Integrate with the Claude Marketplace

Duet relies on over 6,000 connectors to function. If your software is not in the Claude Marketplace, you lose visibility. B2B founders need to build integrations now so Duet can read their data.

Design for automated background traffic

Agents like Duet will ping your servers constantly to check for updates. You pay the server costs for this automated traffic. Engineers must optimize endpoints to handle high-frequency polling without breaking the bank.

Build trust with granular permissions

Duet pauses for user approval before making payments or deleting files. Users are terrified of agents making costly mistakes. Builders who implement clear approval checkpoints will win user trust over those who fully automate.

My take

We are moving from AI as an assistant to AI as a manager. I love that Duet messages you first, but the background compute costs will be brutal. If you build AI products, stop making chatbots and start building proactive systems.
