Anthropic Launches Claude Duet: An AI Agent That Messages You First
Claude Duet flips the chatbot model. It watches your apps, works in the cloud while you sleep, and messages you when it needs approval.

What happened
Anthropic just opened a research preview for Claude Duet. It is a standalone proactive agent app for iOS, Android, and the web. Instead of waiting for a prompt, it messages you first. Built around Claude Opus 5.5, it sends a morning brief of what needs your attention across your connected apps. It carries over your memory, skills, and existing connected apps from your main Claude account.
The app runs on its own cloud virtual machine with a dedicated browser. You can close your laptop, and it keeps working. It handles complex tasks like scheduling, building dashboards, creating financial forecasts, and prototyping web apps. It checks your accounts every few hours and pings you when a task is done or needs review. Anthropic explicitly chose not to check nonstop to save compute.
It does not act blindly. Duet reads and drafts on its own, but it stops and waits for your approval before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting anything. Some actions, like trading securities, are completely off-limits. Access is currently waitlisted for US users on Pro and Max plans. Team and Enterprise plans do not have access yet.
Key facts
- Opus 5.5 โ The underlying model powering Claude Duet
- 6,000 โ Number of connectors and plugins available in the Claude Marketplace
- $20 โ Monthly cost of Claude Pro in the US, which includes Duet access
Why it matters
We are moving from passive chatbots to always-on employees. You no longer have to open a hundred tabs to chase invoices or draft emails. Duet connects to over 6,000 plugins in the Claude Marketplace. It can prepare payroll in Gusto with hours and bonuses filled in. It can check Stripe for unpaid invoices and draft reminders. It can route agreements through Docusign. It brings the finished work to you for a final click.
The catch is the compute cost. Duet shares the usage limits of your existing Claude Pro or Max plan. Because it runs background checks and executes large tasks like financial modeling on its own, it burns through your quota while you are not even looking at the screen. Heavy users will hit their caps much faster. You are paying for an assistant that never sleeps, but every background thought it has costs you a piece of your daily limit.
For builders
Background tasks drain user quotas fast
Duet checks connected apps every few hours. These background checks and autonomous model turns count against the user shared plan limits. Builders making proactive agents must solve this compute drain or users will cancel when they hit caps unexpectedly.
Approval gates build user trust
Anthropic hardcoded stops for sending messages, moving money, or signing documents. The agent prepares the work but forces a human click to execute via tools like Link or Shop Pay. This is the exact blueprint for getting businesses to adopt autonomous tools without fear.
Virtual machines replace local execution
Duet uses a cloud virtual machine and its own browser instead of relying on your local device. This allows true asynchronous work without draining local battery or requiring open tabs. Engineers should note that cloud-based execution is becoming the standard for reliable agentic workflows.
My take
Chatbots are dead. The future belongs to agents that tap you on the shoulder only when they need a decision. But Anthropic making background tasks eat into your manual chat quota is a cheap move. If I pay for an autonomous agent, I should not have to worry about it burning my limits while I sleep. Builders need to figure out a better pricing model for background compute.
